This route works because it keeps the day concentrated on Tokyo's west side: start quiet at Meiji Shrine, move through Harajuku and Shibuya, then finish in Shinjuku with skyline views, lanterns and a proper dinner.
Tokyo's trains make this day simple. Walk from Meiji Shrine into Harajuku, then continue toward Shibuya if you feel like walking. If not, hop on the Yamanote Line. From Shibuya, take the train to Shinjuku and stay on foot for the rest of the evening.
Start before the shopping streets get busy. Walk the forested approach, pass beneath the torii gates and give yourself about an hour for the shrine grounds.
Walk Takeshita Street for the color and chaos, then shift to Omotesando or Cat Street for the more grown-up side of the neighborhood.
Walk down from Harajuku if you want to keep exploring, or take the Yamanote Line to Shibuya. Cross the Scramble once, then stand back for a few minutes and watch it happen again — it really is something to see. This is also one of the best moments of the day for photos and video as the crowd pours through from every direction.
Head to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and take the free observatory up for the city view. Time it for late afternoon so the skyline starts changing while you're there.
This is the experience stop. Squeeze into one of the tiny yakitori counters, order a cold beer or highball and a few skewers — enough for an appetizer, not the whole dinner.
Then do the opposite of the alley: go upstairs, settle in and make dinner the polished finish. New York Grill pairs skyline views with a proper sit-down meal and keeps you in Shinjuku.

Smaller, design-forward and much more intimate. It sits by Yoyogi Park, close to the Harajuku and Shibuya side of this day, with a modern Japanese-Scandinavian feel.
